The Birth of New Zealand

About this object

An extract from one of New Zealand’s earliest feature films which portrayed the colonisation of New Zealand. This scene shows a ball at Government House, prior to troops being dispatched to Akaroa in a race against the French. Pioneer film maker Ted Coubray, who worked as crew on the film and as an extra, can be seen in the final shots, where two men are talking together (he is on the left). Only fragments of the film are known to survive. Video excerpt (1.4MB 000:55)
