Toki (Adze), Side Cutting

About this object

This is a rare example of a side cutting toki. Known as a side hafted toki, they are really hafted the normal way but are side cutting. Made from argillite, this example comes from the Southland region. The toki is finished, hammer-dressed, partly ground and has a chipped cutting edge. Originally a dark green colour, the toki has weathered to a light green.
