Name/Title

Hei Pounamu, (bowenite pendant)

About this object

This hei pounamu is very unusual in its shape with the rounded spur projecting out from it. It is thought that it could be in the shape of a whale-tail, fish or whale form using the hole as eye, or the profile of a whale tooth.
It is a stunning example of the skill pounamu-workers have and the beautiful objects that they can create.

There is a similar piece on the Te Papa Tongarewa website.
