About this object

This trophy was awarded to John Brown of Waimatuku for winning the Ploughing Competition as the best double furrow ploughman in 1872 & 1874. The trophy was presented to the Western District Farmers Club by Christopher Basstian as a 'Challenge Cup'.

Ploughing competitions regularly feature on the rural calendar, however, this trophy is from one of the earliest competitions held in New Zealand.
