About this object

This is a kete (Māori basket) woven from fine strands of flax in a yellow and white gingham pattern.

Kete had many uses historically and is now popular as an alternative to tote bags. Likewise, both flax harvesting and weaving are widely performed today, incorporating the practice into modern art pieces as well as keeping the tradition alive.
