Strap, School StrapAbout this object
This is a school strap which belonged to teacher Marjory Faith Hogg. Originally from Orepuki, Marjory used this strap when she taught at Round Hill School in the 1920s.
The use of corporal punishment in New Zealand schools was common practice and many adults can recount tales of why they got ‘the strap’. Schools abolished the use of the strap in 1987 and the New Zealand Government officially outlawed the practice in 1990. Today, teachers can be charged with physical abuse and imprisoned for a maximum of five-years.
