Framed photograph, Family of George and Mary Ann Calder

About this object

The Calder family - George and Mary Ann (née Mary Officer). George Calder is seated in the centre, holding a walking stick. Mary Ann does not appear to be in this photograph as her name is not mentioned on either of the two labels. The printed label (which has come loose from the glass) gives us the names most clearly, as someone has transcribed them from the fainter ink writing below and added the last names. The names given are:

Back row: Margaret Mariah (Mrs J.D. Campbell), Mary Spark, George, John, Jane Ann Forbes (Mrs William McKintosh).

Seated on chairs: Alfred Henry, Jessie (Mrs W. Campbell), George Calder, Betsy [Bessie in original cursive ink inscription], William.

On the ground: Alexander Officer and Charles Crombie.

McKesch photographs date from around 1905 to 1923. Henry John McKesch was a native of London, born circa 1857. He came to Southland and lived at Drummond and Thornbury, before settling in Riverton. He was well known for photographing events around the region, sports meetings, shows, livestock, groups, etc. He was a well respected and active member of his community, helping at the hospital during the influenza epidemic, serving on the committee of the Athenaeum, and an active parishioner. Henry died suddenly in 1923, aged 66.
