About this object

This photograph album belonged to Mrs Margaret McVicar of Tuatapere and records: daily life, Western Southland events and scenes particularly of Tuatapere and District including Happy Valley. There are also a number of photographs relating to the The New Zealand and South Seas International Exhibition, which was held in Dunedin during 1925 and 1926. Margaret loved animals and this theme shines through the album. It is clear that Margaret was a skilled photographer and an inscription on the reverse of one photo tells us she was friends with S L McNeil, a professional photographer in Riverton who also sold photography supplies. The portrait of the little girl on the first page bears a handwritten inscription from him, that reads 'This is a snap of my little girl taken with a 3A Special, f8, you must see this when you come down. S L McNeil'.

Margaret herself appears in the album. On page 5, in the top two photos, with a cat and seated at a table in the garden. On page 10, on the bottom right with dog. On page 16, centre bottom with newspaper. Page 17, 3 bottom photographs with dog, dog on box, and cow. Page 18, seated with newspaper, printed in an oval shape.

Margaret Frentz was born at Orepuki on 26 May 1881 the daughter of Danish born Carl ‘Charles’ Frentz and Mary Frew. She married Donald McVicar, a West Coast miner on 3 February 1914. After World War One they farmed at Happy Valley/Te Tua. After their marriage ended, Margaret lived at 17 King Street, Tuatapere (Running Water) for the rest of her life. She did not have children and died on 4 November 1964. Margaret left her estate to the S.P.C.A. and bequeathed her chattels to the Wallace Early Settlers Association. This is album is one of those gifts.
