HM Queen Elizabeth II

About this object

This piece was painted to commemorate the Queen's Diamond Jubilee year. The artist had a physical sitting with the Queen in October 2013 at Buckingham Palace in the gold drawing room. Artist, Nick Cuthell was allowed to chose the Queen's dress and pose. His Royal Highness Prince William, Duke of Cambridge, unveiled this portrait of his grandmother at Government House, Wellington, at a state reception during the Duke and Duchess' visit to New Zealand.

Nick Cuthell, a London-based Wellingtonian was formally trained at the Slade School of Art in London. Portraiture plays a central role in his artistic practice.

The portrait was commissioned by the New Zealand Portrait Gallery, made possible by an anonymous donor group of young New Zealanders that wished to mark their loyalty to the Queen in celebration of her 60 years as Queen of New Zealand.
