Doulton Lambeth cricketers stoneware tyg
About this object
This ornate Doulton Lambeth tyg, engraved with "Xmas 1881", was apparently a Christmas gift for a cricket fan of the 1800s. No doubt a dedicated follower of Grace.
Tygs typically featured three handles which enabled the rim to be divided up for several drinkers to use the same vessel. This one incorporates three panels depicting cricket scenes, each within a stylised floral decoration.
Tygs were often known as 'loving cups'.
