Visiting Book of Reverend Dr Thomas Burns.
About this objectThe ‘Visitation Book’ of Rev Thomas Burns is the ‘Doomsday Book’ of Otago’s early settlers. Burns made periodic ‘visitations’ to all the houses within his ‘parish’, which in the first years included the whole of the Otago Block. He recorded the personal details of all those he met, noting ages, family relationships and religious affiliations and making occasional comments. Since he repeated the visitations on an annual basis it is possible to track the growth of early families from these records as well as their movement around the district over the first decade of settlement.
