Hinaki/Punga/eel trapAbout this object
A circular form of eel trap, made by Puia of Kitinikau. Puia died in 1870. It measures 600 x 580 x 650mm (HWD). The old trap would have been pikau/carried on the back, from place to place in the eeling season. A very fine specimen of this type. Hinaki were chiefly constructed from kiekie(Freycinetia Banksii) steeped in water until pliable, and this was light, strong and flexible. A gift from the William Fraser Collection. Copyright
