About this object

This is a whale vertebra, probably from the upper caudal section of the animal's spine.

Whales were hunted in the Foveaux Strait from the 1820s to the 1840s by both Māori and Pākehā for their meat, bones, and blubber. A small excerpt about whaling in the Foveaux Strait can be found on Te Ara.
