About this object

This is a photograph of the Te Ara O Kiwa Bluff Sea Scouts taken by Campbell Studios in Invercargill. Little is known about this photograph, however, a few names have been recorded on the back: Jackie Walker (2nd left back row), ? Roderique (5th right, last, back row) and Jimmy Butler (left of the flag 2nd row).

A Brief History of the Te Ara O Kiwa Bluff Sea Scouts:

Rev. Swinburn (Gladstone) formed the Bluff branch of the Sea Scout in 1910. In doing so, he established the southernmost branch of the Sea Scouts in the world. An excellent recruiter, by September 1910 the Rev. had enrolled 40-50 members. The following year, Scoutmistress Hannah formed the female branch of the organisation. For over 100-years, the Sea Scouts have held a strong tradition in Bluff as an important group in a town which lives and breathes the ocean.
