About this object

This is a black and white photograph of Meronea Spencer grading and counting oysters.

Meronea has graded oysters all of her adult life. After leaving school, she worked for two seasons at Fowler and Roderique in Bluff before moving to Invercargill. This photograph was taken in 1970 at Fresh Oysters Limited's Invercargill factory where Meronea (aged 17) briefly worked as an oyster grader.

Meronea has graded oysters every season since then at Barnes Oysters, Invercargill with the exception of the 1993, 1994 and 1995 seasons when the oyster fishery was closed due to a Bonumia infection. Meronea's expertise and the camaraderie at Barnes Oysters explain her 45+ years long service.
