About this object
A wooden carving depicting the ship The Mermaid and words 'The Mermaid Captian J.R.Kent took away first export flax from Bluff 1823. Teak Sheathing plank from 800 ton India Man Endeavour Captain Bampton abandoned at Dusk Sound New Zealand 1795.'
The Mermaid was the vessel that contained the first flax export from Bluff in 1823 with Captain J. R. Kent. The wood used in this carving is teak from a ship known as The Indiaman Endeavour, captained by Captain William Wright Bampton, that was wrecked in the Dusky Sound in Facile Harbour, in the October of 1795.
