Apron
About this object
Embroidered black silk satin apron, featuring a basket of roses, and garlands of roses with blue daisies and tiny lilac buds in a range of stitches around the two pockets and bottom edge. The basket has a lilac ribbon bow on the handle, both of which are embroidered in satin stitch. The basket itself is embroidered in basket stitch using couched gold-wrapped silk thread. The roses are formed using French knots. The green stems and leaves are stem stitch. The original transfer for the embroidery can be seen in places. The apron is edged with a black silk fringe.
A paper note on an old brown envelope is stitched to the front of the apron with ink handwriting: 'Oatlands / W.F Hansen 21437 / Ward I / Fancy Work'. A small piece of red paper is in the left pocket with handwritten ink: '1st. prize special'.
