About this object

Back in 1902, Thomas Rangiwahia Ellison, also known as Tom or Tamati Erihana (Ngāi Tahu and Te Āti Awa), penned one of the earliest New Zealand rugby books: The Art of Rugby Football. A true rugby pioneer, Tom Ellison also devised the indigenous 2-3-2 scrum and wing forward position, played for the 1888-89 Native Team, captained and coached the very first New Zealand rugby team and, at the first annual New Zealand Rugby Football Union meeting in 1893, successfully moved that the national uniform comprise a black jersey with a silver fern.
