This book was given to Margaret Edith Lush on the day of her Confirmation. An inscription inside the book reads: ‘Margaret Edith Lush as a rememberance of her Confirmation, 15th Aug. 12th Sunday after Trinity, from her Godmother and sister Blanche, 1875.’ Vicesimus Lush, the father of Margaret Edith, was an Anglican minister who served in the Auckland and the Waikato regions. Therefore, much of Margaret Edith’s life would have been centred around the Anglican Church and parish events.
Tragically, Margaret Edith died from scarlet fever on 22 April 1876 at the age of 16. While the death of a child was not unusual during the Victorian era, this does not mean that the loss was not felt greatly by parents and family members. In the Lush family archives held at Ewelme Cottage, there are a number of mementoes which serve as poignant reminders of the family’s tragic loss, including photographs of her gravestone, memorium cards, and inscriptions in books.
This book was later given to Margaret Edith’s younger brother William Edward. In the front page it states that he was baptised on 2 February 1862, confirmed on 19 May 1878, and received his First Communion on 16 June 1878.
