Kiln dried tobacco; Unknown; 2811

Kiln dried tobacco

About this object

A photograph showing hanks of tobacco on sticks ready for drying in a kiln. Prior to 1995, when commercial tobacco growing ceased in the Motueka area, there were many kilns dotted around the country side; tobacco was a main crop and it's planting and harvesting involved virtually all the population, including children.
