Baby Pilch, Silk Knitted Nappy Cover; Unknown maker; 1925-1930; WY.0000.194

Name/Title

Baby Pilch, Silk Knitted Nappy Cover

About this object

This is a cream coloured knitted knicker pilch, worked mainly in garter stitch but also incorporating picot trim and ribbing. Made from medium-weight silk yarn, this item was made to cover a cloth nappy, and the garter stitch used made this garment more absorbent than a flat stitch. It was constructed in one piece, with side seams stitched later, and may well have been made from left over yarn from a set of baby items made by the same donor.
