About this object

This memorial plaque, known as a Dead Man's Penny, commemorates Private James Telfer. James came from Mataura Island and enlisted for World War One at Wyndham in 1916. As a 22-year old Private in the Otago Regiment, James was killed in action in France on 24 August 1918. He is buried in Beaulencourt British Cemetery, Ligny-Thilloy, France.
