About this object

This is a miniature painting of Pilot Officer Randolph Smart, a local man who was killed during World War Two.

Born in August 1917 to George and Florence Smart, Randolph fought with the Royal New Zealand Air Force 75 Squadron. On 10 September 1942 Randolph went missing over Germany, and was later classified as killed in action. He is remembered on the Runnymede Memorial in Surrey, England.
