About this object

This is a photograph of a banner belonging to the National Body of Country Women's Institutes (CWI). The 75th Jubilee of the National Country Women's Institute was held in Wyndham in 1995.

The CWI began in Canada in 1897. The Mimihau CWI held its first meeting on 1st April 1948. In 1951 they began catering for the Dog Trials and continued through until 2001. The Mimihau Institute has always been generous in support of worthy causes and made a regular donation to the Southland Hospice.

The Institute remained strong throughout the 1990s when membership stood at 21. Since then numbers declined to 12 in 2009. Shortly afterwards the Institute closed.
