Prayer Book, A Manual of Devout Prayers and other Christian Devotions

About this object

This small book, 'A manual of prayers and other Christian devotions' was printed in London in 1720, and sold by Thomas Meighan of Drury Lane in 1729. It is leather bound with tight silver clasps, and within the pages is a hand painted filigree cut work place-marker, probably made from vellum.

This book relates to the Lyon and Ochterlony family of Scotland. John Lyon married Jane Ochterlony (daughter of Alexander Ochterlony Esq of Pitlochry in the county of Angus, Scotland in 1748. They had several children, all dying young or without issue except for David Lyon. David Lyon (1794-1872) of Portland Place, London married Isabella Read and may be the person who inscribed the book in 1860.
