Diary, Quibell Stockowner's Note Book 1924 -25About this object
This 1924-25 Quibell Notebook is full of information for the famer, including sheep dipping, worming, and treatment for flyblow. There is a section on dogs and how to treat distemper, mange, chorea etc, and a section covering poultry and the treatment of cholera, rupe, gapes and scaly leg. There is also a recipe for lime wash to clean the hen house. We are given the dimension of a haystack and how to stack it, and a page on how to help in the case of accidents (this section would have OSH jumping up and down). Page 89 is given to antidotes for poisons.
In the central memoranda section are hand written notes of how to treat footroot in cows, ringworm, mange, wounds, blowing in cattle, hard udder, lice in pigs. Some of the interesting remedies are:
Tutu poisoning - give the cow 3 parts of baking soda in a bottle of water, bleed the animal
Slugs - to kill slugs put Alum around the plants affected.
Headache - Calcium chloride to be made.
Distemper - roll 5 Aspro tablets in butter and put them down the dogs throat. A good preventative for distemper is to put sulphur in their food.
The notebook also contains a list of Galbraiths ages as of November 14 1937:
Davie - 19 years in February; Violet - 17 years on 25 November 1937;

These names relate to the family of William John and Alice McKenzie (nee Campbell) Galbraith. William was originally from Waikouaiti, and Alice from Wakatipu, however, they raised their family in Timaru. We believe Alice is connected to the Carnie, McKenzie, and Campbell families of our area.
