About this object

This is a photograph of John Beange prior to his service during World War One. Born on 15 December 1873 to Alexander and Christina Beange, John grew up at Mimihau. In 1906, he married May Wright, and between 1906 and 1914 they had four children, John, Mona May, Seymour Frank, Ruth Hazel.

John embarked for the front on 26 July 1916 on board the Waitemata or Ulimaroa. He fought with the 15th Reinforcements, J Company, and returned to New Zealand in September 1918.

John died on 10 January 10 1940, and is buried in the Wyndham Cemetery.
