About this objectThis is a black and white photograph of a Prize Ayrshire Cow which belonged to the Galt family of Marairua. In the early days the family specialized in Ayrshire cattle and owned one of the finest herds in Southland. James Galt kept growing his Ayrshire herd and won many trophies. The herd of up to 70 cows was milked by hand, a very time consuming task. James Galt was a very capable cattle judge and his time was sought near and far.
