This is a photograph of Annie and Gus Stevenson in 1920. Gus is wearing the leather apron of a carter.
Gus Stevenson came to Wyndham in 1891 to work in Richardson's Stables and became a popular driver of the Edendale coach. He commenced business on his own account as a general carter, forwarding agent and coal merchant about 1909. Trains were met and passengers and luggage called for in any part of the town. He and his horse and cart were a familiar sight in the town until 1944.
Their family of three daughters were Catherine (Cathy), Mary and Isabella (Ella).
Gus died 7 October 1951, aged 86 years and his wife Annie died 17 February 1931, aged 61 years. They lie at rest in the Wyndham Cemetery.
