Brooch, Filigree with Stones
About this object
This sparkly filigree brooch was most likely purchased to be worn with a red velvet dress also in our collection. The dress itself dates to 1937-38, and belonged Catherine Johnston of Coalpit Road.
About Catherine:
Catherine Rutherford McIntyre was born in 1887 to Beatrice and John Pearson McIntyre of Maitland. In Febuary 1915, she married John Johnston. The pair had gone to school together, however, they didn't marry until they were both 28.
Catherine and John had three children, Pearson, Albert and Beatrice. The couple originally farmed on the Lodge Ridge which is near Balfour/Lumsden, however, in 1921 they shifted to a farm known as 'Helmsdale' along Coalpit Road between Wyndham and Edendale. Here they brought up their children.
Catherine died relatively young on 1 July 1940 aged only 52-years.
