About this object

This oil painting is one of a pair donated by Daphne Richardson. It has been made on a concave tin plaque which incorporates a hanging loop on the reverse.

Daphne donated artworks painting by her mother Mary Jane Richardson nee Carson. Mary Jane Carson was born in 1896 to Robert Carson and Mary Ann nee Dodd. Mary Ann’s father, Robert Dodd was the original settler on land just north of Wyndham. Robert Carson aged 16 came to his uncle William Carpenter, at ‘Tamlet’, Mimihau, after the death of his parent’s in Ireland. The Carson’s farmed near the Mimihau bridge. Mary Ann Carson died aged 42 leaving a young family. Mary Jane Carson was the eldest daughter. Her two elder brothers died in World War One (1915 and 1917), and two sisters died in 1917 and 1919.

William (d.1942 aged 58) and Mary Jane Richardson died in 1975 aged 79, her husband William having died in 1942 at aged 58. They are buried together in the Wyndham Cemetery, along with their daughter Daphne who died in 2004.
