Photograph, Framed Wyndham School Diamond Jubilee 1875-1931About this object
This is a photograph of the First Decade 1875 - 1882 [sic] pupils who attended the Wyndham School Diamond Jubilee (1875 - 1931) on the January 23, 1931.
Formal schooling began in Wyndham in 1875 when the Rev James Henry began a private school in a cottage in Inkerman Street, behind Fletcher's store. This cottage also provided accommodation for the teacher, Mrs Hamilton. Fees at Mr Henry's school were one shilling a week per child and each pupil paid extra for pens, pencils, slates and paper.
In September 1876 the government granted 185 pounds for a new public school on the school reserve. It was built in Scutari Street by Mr Elliot, opening in 1877 with 34 pupils, and in 1878 the residence for a teacher was built on the corner of Scutari and Alma Street.
