About this object

This left-side collar badge of the 7th Southland Mounted Rifles was brought back from World War One by Robert Douglas (Doug) Story.

The 7th Southland Mounted Rifles formed on March 17, 1911 and was part of the Otago Mounted Rifles, serving in the Battle of Gallipoli. They would later serve in France with the New Zealand Division.

The badge features the motto 'Celeret aud ax', which means swift and bold, and depicts a Sparrowhawk (Karearea) showing fearlessness by swooping on its prey.
