About this object

This is Sister Isabella (Ella) Ramsay Stevenson's Most Excellent Order of the Empire Medal (MBE). Ella was award the medal in 1968 for Services to Nursing.

Nurse Stevenson was a Public Health Nurse who visited schools to inspect the health of children. She is remembered as a 'very good nurse', who had a stern exterior but 'a good heart'.

The daughter of Annie and Gus Stevenson, Ella and her two sisters, Cathy and Mary grew up in Wyndham. Ella trained in general, maternity, Plunket and midwifery nursing. In 1939 she was appointed Public Health Nurse in Gore with Wyndham as part of her district. In this role, Ella's duties included preventative medicine, social welfare, tuberculosis investigation, child health and some industrial follow up work.
