Medal, Scoular for Highland Ploughing 1861About this object
This medal was awarded to Thomas Scoular in 1861 by the Highland Agricultural Society of Scotland, first instituted in 1784. From the design we can assume it was awarded for ploughing, and Thomas was living or working at Hill House.
Thomas Scoular arrived in Bluff in the 1860s, and worked at various occupations, including meat packing and sawmilling, before becoming the Manager of the Edendale Dairy Factory and holding that position for 16 years. In 1895 Thomas received several awards at the Dunedin Show, including a medal for the best 10 cwt factory cheese and a silver teapot for the factory's half-ton cheese.
This medal further indicates Thomas's abilities as an all-rounder, able to turn his hand to anything and achieving success in every venture.
