About this object

This photograph is of Pilot Officer Stephen Francis Baird (NZ4212743) of Wyndham, a local man who was killed during World War Two.

Stephen was the son of Dr James Henderson and Millicent (nee Butson) Baird. He flew for the Royal New Zealand Air Force, 2 Squadron in the Pacific. Stephen was killed in an aircraft accident at Vanuatu on January 17, 1944, aged 33. Stephen left behind his wife, Myra Garfield Baird who was living in Christchurch at the time of his death.

Stephen's younger brother Flight Lieutenant Angus Baird was killed during the war a couple of years prior on 20 June 1941.

Stephen is remembered on the Bourail Memorial, Bourail New Zealand War Cemetery, New Caledonia.
