About Nichol Bros & Co:

Ernst Nichol established his company in 1865. In the beginning, Nichol’s operated as the first Cobb & Co agents for the Bluff to Invercargill run and later operated the railway line between Bluff and Invercargill.

In 1874, Ernst's brother, George, joined the company and they expanded into wool and grain storage. At this time, they were also running two whaling ships, and when the market fell out of the whaling industry they branched into importing coal from Newcastle, Australia.

Working as an office boy, Joseph Ward, who later became Prime Minister of New Zealand, was one of the company's first staff members.

In 1946, Ernst's grandson, also named Ernst Nichol, took over the business. Ernst had quite an impact, expanding the company to include the manufacturing of poultry and stock foods, and in 1948 Ernst opened a stock food manufacturing factory in Dunedin.

In 1965 Neville Dippie became the operational manager of the Dunedin operation. Focusing on stock food in Dunedin meant that the company was very susceptible to seasonal changes in profitability and in 1974, Neville suggested the company opened a gardening store to boost their summer income. In 1984, Neville and Gaynor Dippie purchased Nichol's Gardens and having grown up working in the factory, the following year, the Dippie's sons Allan and Martin joined their parents.

As of 2019, the Nichol's company continues to be owned by Allan. It operates a garden store in Dunedin and has branched out into landscaping in Central Otago.
