Joseph Soutar was Maud Low's nephew. Soutar served in the United States army during the Spanish-American War of 1898 and then in the Philippines. He came to New Zealand in 1921. He bought Fyffe House from Jimmy Johnston in 1935. Maud Low (the Low family had let the property off Johnston since about the 1920s) continued to live in the house, while Soutar lived in a small bach on the property.
