Whale bone

About this object

Whale bone; an ear bone of a right whale (taxonomic family Balaenidae, genus Eubalaena).

Right whales made easy targets for shore-based whalers. They were slow-swimming and floated when harpooned rather than sank. Their migratory pattern brought them to the east coast of the south island where they would come inshore to mate and calve. By 1850 the right whale had been hunted almost to extinction.
