About this object

Hand carved wooden fire mantel. The panels in this mantel depict scotch thistles and the motto "nemo me impune lacessit" {no one provokes me with impunity}. This is the motto of the order of the scotch thistle. Found boarded up in a property once owned by the Cunningham family this mantle is believed to be the work of Italian immigrant Carini who vanished in 1908.
