Plesiastrea sp. A fossil reef coral; AU-H368

Name/Title

Plesiastrea sp. A fossil reef coral

About this object

Fossil reef coral from the Early Miocene (22-19 million years old) of Hukatere Peninsula, Kaipara Harbour, North Island, New Zealand. The seas around New Zealand are too cold for reef corals to grow today so their presence in the Miocene indicates a much warmer climate at that time.
