About this object

A single well preserved Late Jurassic (147 million years old) Araucarian cone scale from Port Waikato, North Island, New Zealand. The Araucariaceae is a family of ancient pines which includes Kauri (Agathis australis), Monkey Puzzle Trees (Araucaria araucana) and Bunya-bunya (Araucaria bidwillii). This cone scale was produced by a tree growing on the eastern shore of the ancient supercontinent of Gondwana.
