Subject and Association Description

Born in Palmerston North, Hanly attended night classes in art at the then Palmerston North Technical College. Though he never returned to live in Palmerston North after moving to Christchurch to study art in 1952, he retained a connection of sorts with the city. In deciding to donate this work to Te Manawa, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade acknowledged the institution’s “small, but significant collection of work by Patrick Hanly” and the artist’s connection to the city. Hanly often explored serious political and social concerns in his art that are belied by his exuberant use of colour and form.
