Place Made Subject and Association DescriptionMaughan’s mother is a landscape designer and during his youth the pair frequently visited gardens in the Kimbolton area, including Cross Hills Gardens. In 2004 Maughan was living in London and Palmerston North photographer Catherine Russ sent him photographs of Cross Hills’ rhododendron gardens. Cross Hills was actually painted in Auckland, where Maughan has since returned to live. The painting’s story neatly sums up the geographical moves his career has taken him on, from Palmerston North to Auckland for art school, from Auckland to London and back again.
