Subject and Association Description

While living in Scotland, James Nairn belonged to a group of artists called the 'Glasgow Boys' who were interested in painting the everyday, instead of the more academic style painting which was prevalent at the time. Nairn moved to New Zealand in 1890 because of the temperate climate for his ill health. This image is likely to have been painted in his own garden in Thorndon, Wellington.
