Bridegroom in Borrowed Clothing
French artist Amedeo Modigliani’s 1915/16 painting Bride and Groom provided the inspiration for this work. Verdcourt was attracted to the groom as a subject by “the way his nose went in the painting.” Modigliani’s painting finishes just above the groom’s eyebrows. While Verdcourt thinks he was probably wearing a top hat, she has borrowed a bowler hat that featured in a number of paintings by the Belgian surrealist artist René Magritte. "As a young child, Verdcourt spent many hours poring over her father’s extensive collection of art books with her twin sister. Verdcourt has distinct memories of expecting to turn the page and being able to see the rest of the painting; what might be through the door, the detail of the back of a dress, the shadow from light falling on an object.
This intrigue with the secrets of the two-dimensional world and a desire to see how something might inhabit the real, three-dimensional world has been an ongoing obsession throughout her practice. Verdcourt has an extensive collection of art books and found images that she constantly refers back to. Verdcourt literally unpacks these paintings and translates them into clay, in doing so converses with both the objects in the art works and the artists.
