Kauri Seed Necklace/Lei

About this object

“Since 1979 the work I have been making has reflected concerns about Pacific adornment and a sense of time and place in Aotearoa. [My] work has been influenced by materials and traditions of adornment used in the past, by indigenous materials not used for adornment and by contemporary traditions.” Alan Preston In 1975 Alan Preston moved from central Auckland to Muriwai Beach. In recent years Muriwai, with its bushy surrounds, gannet colony and windy roads, has become increasing present in his work. His daily walks have become collection trips for materials, including shells, feathers and seeds.
