Ava Woman

About this object

'Ava Woman' depicts the Taupou (chiefly maiden) preparing ava (kava) for the legendary Samoan ancetress Nafanua (or Nanaifanua). The image of a woman making ava has appeared in a wide range of Lily Laita’s work as “a vessel of process and also as a metaphor for dilution of culture – ‘just add water’, ‘instant culture’, ‘instant narcotic’.”
