About this object

Raymond Hrstich (son of Milan and Danica) holding an octopus c. 1950
At low tide, by the present day Surf Club (2017) there were many rock pools. A woman was in a rock pool and the octopus attached itself to her leg. The octopus fell off as the woman ran for help. Raymond then went into the rock pool to catch the octopus.

Milan Hrstich relocated 5 trams to Mangawhai in 1956 following the decomission of the trams in Auckland, siting them on good sections with sea views. Milan let family and friends use the trams until about the 1960's when he began to sell them off.

Milan Hrstich (b. 4/1/1901 d. 1996) married to Danica. Milan's birth date may have been changed as he was born in Austria. The Austrian Hungarian Army had intakes of boys starting at 14 years or older. His mother encouraged him to leave Austria so he would not be drafted into the army. By 18 years of age Milan was digging gum around Mangawai.
