About this object

A photograph album that contains photos regarding the felling of an 800 year old kauri tree c 1991. This tree was on the farm 'Pukenui', Kaiwaka, which belonged to John Lawrence (known as Lawrie) and Doreen Balderston. The timber was used to benefit the restoration project at Pompallier House, Russell, Northland. A longitudinal cross section was also donated to The Kauri Museum, Matakohe, Northland.
There are newspaper cuttings that describe the felling of the tree. Various ages of the tree have been mentioned with the fact that the tree had been struck by lighting and was dead.
At the end of the album is an account that Lawrie and Doreen received from Lane & Sons Ltd, who were an 'unique historical working kauri mill' based at Totara North. The account shows the number of kauri logs purchased by Bergmans and Lane & Son Ltd. Details include the amount of millable and rotten timber received by the mill.
